Goods Lifts vs Lifting Tables - When and why to use them?

In many industries, companies face the challenge of optimizing material handling. Efficient handling is crucial for many businesses. However, there are different options for handling and transporting materials, and the choice is influenced by customer needs and existing conditions. When there is a need to handle materials at height, there are usually two solutions to choose from: lifting tables and goods lifts. Here, we explore the different solutions, how they work, and in which situations they are most suitable.

What is a goods lift and how does it work?

Goods lifts, also known as mast lifts, freight elevators, goods elevators, material lifts, stop-level elevators, mezzanine lifts, etc., is a vertical unit that easily moves loads between two or more floors. Unlike passenger elevators, goods lifts are designed to handle large and heavy loads. However, all models can be equipped with a certificate for an accompanying operator.

Goods lifts are widely used in manufacturing, warehouses, and logistics to move materials quickly and safely between floors. Goods lifts can also optimize space through vertical
storage of goods, and solutions like the self-supporting LogicoUP can be installed on any industrial site without the need to anchor at the landings.

*Note: To transport people, without goods or materials, between different floors, a customized passenger elevator designed and certified for passenger transport is required.

What is a lifting table and how does it work?

SScissor lift tables, or simply lifting tables, are mainly used to lift and lower objects with small to medium height differences but can also be used as goods elevators or for logistics handling. As the platform can be raised and lowered, it offers flexible handling of materials at different heights while improving ergonomics for the operator.

With its wide variety, there are several areas of use for lift tables including, for example some of the most common, loading and unloading goods on pallets, improving work positions during assembly and disassembly, and handling materials in workshops and production facilities.

What is the difference between a goods lift and a lifting table?

When there is a need to handle materials at a high height, the solutions differ, considering the requirements for the installation site or platform flexibility. For example, the lifting table has a scissor construction under the platform, allowing it to stand completely independently. At the same time, this means that the lifting table has a high minimum height since the platform cannot be lowered as far as a goods lift. In these cases, a lifting table may need to be installed in a pit for the platform to be level with the ground.

Goods lifts have a mast construction that must be anchored to a wall or a shaft. The mast construction means that it has a low minimum height and may not necessarily need to be installed in a pit.

Both goods lifts and lifting tables can thus be used to handle and move goods and materials.

PRODUCT APPLICATION MAX TRAVEL LIFTING CAPACITY
Goods lift Ideal for vertically moving material between floors The range includes goods lifts with up to 16 meters Up to 5000 kg
Lifting table Typically used to gain ergonomic efficiency in moving loads The standard range includes lifting tables up to 7 meters Up to 3.5 tons with max travel of 7 meters
Up to 10,000 kg with max travel of 1,8 meters

Choosing the right solution: which one suits you best?

The choice between a lifting table and goods lift depends on specific needs and usage. When exploring different options for material handling, it is important to consider requirements and conditions such as:

          • Space and installation site: Is the installation in a pit, are there walls to screw into, how does the ground look like?
          • How high should the goods or materials be lifted?
          • What type of load is it?
          • How is loading and unloading done? Manually or with the help of, for example, pallet jacks?

By choosing the right solution, the customer can improve their processes, increase productivity, and create a safer and more ergonomic work environment for employees.
